What a Session at Folly Beach Actually Looks Like
We start with the light. For morning sessions, that means arriving before sunrise and walking out toward the water as the sky shifts from dark to gold. The tide determines where we stand. At low tide, the tidal flats stretch wide and the reflections are extraordinary — the kind that make a photograph look like it was taken in two worlds at once. The Morris Island Lighthouse sits just offshore, visible from the south end of the island, and it has a way of anchoring images without demanding attention.
For evening sessions, golden hour at Folly runs long. The low coastal horizon lets the sun descend slowly, and the light that comes off the water in that last 45 minutes before sunset is warm, directional, and forgiving. We'll use the pier — the long wooden structure that stretches out over the surf — for elevated angles and that unmistakable Folly silhouette. We'll find the weathered driftwood above the tide line, the kind that frames two people without any effort. We'll walk the strand, let the moment breathe, and I'll work around you rather than posing you into something that doesn't feel like who you are.
Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes. I keep things relaxed. Most people who show up nervous leave loose and laughing — the beach tends to handle that on its own.

I photograph every session personally. There's no associate photographer, no substitution. When you book me, I'm the one on the beach with you — and I've been working along this coastline for over a decade.
Before your session, I'll help you think through timing and tides. Light changes fast on the water, and a session planned around the right window looks markedly different from one that isn't. I'll send you a short guide on what to wear (the short answer: avoid large logos, lean into layers and soft neutrals, don't be afraid of white on the beach — it works). I'll tell you where to park, where to meet, and what to expect so that when you arrive, there's nothing to figure out.
During the session, I'll keep things moving but not rushed. I work quietly. I'm not a "pose you against the dune and say cheese" photographer — I'm watching for the real moments, the in-between ones, and I'm constantly adjusting to the light. After the session, your gallery is delivered within two weeks, edited to the same standard as everything else in my portfolio.
